Dunno, like you, I have an aversion to docs.  However, I doubt that 
crashed files will go anywhere except where the sysop wants them to.

Apparently so. From the Msged 2.2e docs "new additions" section ...

o  Checks to see if subj is a file and attaches if exists.

There is more, but you'll have to overcome your hatred of docs, and 
read them yourself.  ;-)
