This happened to me when I upgraded Snap and I had to restore from a backup. If everyone else's suggestions don't work, you might want to consider trying Alt-F1 at the boot blob and restore to vga. Maybe that will help get you started, maybe not. The unfortunate result of this is that icons will become very large and you will have to scroll to get to various parts of your desktop.
