subject: Linux fragmentation

In a recent (today) discussion of installing Linux for the
first time:

___--------------------------
William McBrine: 3rd or 4th maintainer of MultiMail code for
many years now. Began with MINIX and changed to Linux some
years? ago.

WMcB probably adds/removes many smaller (under 1meg) files on a
daily basis doing rewrites, compiles, and testing of MultiMail.

newbie: Then I seem to recall that maybe linux isn't as fussy
about fragmentation as windose?

WMcB: "Linux filesystems _also_ tend to get less fragmented
over time than occurs with FAT under Windows, yes. (I'm not
sure about NTFS.) Linux can use any of a variety of
filesystems; the most common is ext2, but others include ext3,
ReiserFS, and XFS."

___--------------------------
Warren Hrach: Long-time FIDO BBS sysop began using OS9 many
years ago (*nixian clone) then switched to Linux some years?
ago. Now operates a BBBS doing FIDO mail transfers.

Warren probably has both small (under 1meg) and large (10 meg
FIDO mail transfers?) being added/removed daily on his Linux
system.

newbie: Then I seem to recall that maybe linux isn't as fussy
about fragmentation as windose?

Warren: "Installing Linux will take care of formatting your
drive and eliminating any fragmentation when it does. Most
regular dist. RedHat, Debian, Slackware use a filesystem, ext2
and later versions ext3. Both never need defragging. The ext3
system can be interrupted with a power failure as it is a
journeling system."

=========================

We have: "Both never need defragging."

And we have: "Linux filesystems _also_ tend to get less
fragmented over time than occurs with FAT under Windows, yes.

Not the same opinions at all really. This is typical of the
contradictions and from experienced knowledgeable Linux users
who cannot be dismissed as unaware of how Linux filesystems
perform on _their_ equipment as they are experiencing it.

What can I say? Confusing...
