In the one case I am thinking of, recoveries were attempted, but the bug-a-boo that had hit the system (through an IE vulnerability) was not "recovered over" and continued to persist. I eventually gave it back to them, and suggested they might want to let the manufacturer look at it. Their remedy: re-install the OS. ;-) I think a good firewall would have kept the bug out, but a lot of people are given the false impression that they don't need one if they access the Internet via dial-up.
