Switches can be very small. I have a gigafast ethernet 10/100 8 port
switch that is 6x4inches and 3/4's of an inch high that can mount on a
wall or back of a desk or whatever. 1 port is selectable to be an
uplink port that could plug into the linksys. It doesn't have to be
next to the router or a computer, can be across the house from any
component. I think each cable can be up to 250 feet. (of course you
won't use that much I think.)
