Vineburg does it all the time. I think he said there's one plane that it
won't fit in (I think it's a widebody). I've seen guys carrying classical
guitars in gig-bags on 737-100s.
If it absolutely won't fit, if you're nice, you have a good crew, and the
flight isn't overbooked, an attendant will often stow it in the coat closet
for you. When Bill came down here, one of the Alaskan attendants actually
removed a floor panel in the isle and put it down there. I wouldn't even
attempt this on a Southwest flight with their cattle-car seating.
