Phil,

A couple ideas to try ...

1. boot to maintenance partition and run chkdsk on all partitions;

if that doesn't cure it,

2. boot to maintenance partition and make one or two temporary changes
to config.sys in the troublesome boot partition, just to modify the
timing. I wish I knew which files were still being loaded at that
point; obviously it's not the basedevs; maybe tweak startup.cmd ... ???
