Hello All!
The Chatham Historic Dockyard, in Chatham, Kent, has over half a
mile of standard gauge track. They have a selection of vehicles,
that include: 0-4-0 steam saddle tank shunter "AJAX"; 0-4-0
diesel shunter "ROCHESTER CASTLE" plus two other diesels.
The dockyard steam volunteers perform demonstration shunting with
the two working locos and a variety of preserved ex-naval wagons.
Also in working order are four dockside steam cranes which were
built by Grafton, and can still lift over 5 tons. They operate on
standard gauge rail track and can pull limited loads.
The ministry of transport have granted permission to pull freight
with the later option of a passenger service when suitable vehicles
become available.
Also planned is a possible re-laying of the track out to St Marys
Island, which was originally part of the much more extensive Naval
Base that closed in 1984.
For any further information, please netmail or email me.
Bye For Now,
Derek
