Many stations don't broadcast on the web.

Okay, I just did roughly what you did. I looked up wamu.org in
my browser (Firefox), then selected #1 (mp3) just like you did.
When I did a window popped up from eCS asking what I wanted to
do with this. I selected the "browse" button, then browsed to
my Z! directory, selected z.exe, and pressed the "go" button on
the window. The Z! playing window immediately popped up and
quickly began playing the talk radio that was being transmitted.
How does this vary from your approach? (Suspicion: You tried to
download an mp3 file whereas these radio stations are all
streamers using the mp3 protocols. A downloaded mp3 is usually
file is usually for just a single track.)
If you have downloaded mp3 files, just open Z! directly and
fiddle with the red screen until you get to the directory where
you've stashed the mp3 file(s). At that point pressing "A" will
mark all mp3 files in that directory for playing. "P" will
initiate playing of all the marked mp3s.
