From what I can tell, they had normal startup problems and at least one hardware failure that caused their reverse DNS to stop working. The effect was that the initial crush of signups created a delay. Then, as news of the delay leaked out more people went to look and test the system (including me) which exaggerated the problem. That was added to people who didn't get a signup confirmation so they re-requested registration. Since then, the initial hubhub has died down and they've added additional servers to support the load.
