Why not replace the wire with something more modern? Any stranded wire built
for this service should do. And it should last a long time if you stay with
the synthetic type insulations.
BTW, the cotton covered rubber is a sign that they really were from 1940 or
before... I'm amazed that wire lasted this long. The rubber tends to
deteriorate fairly rapidly when it is exposed to things like ozone. Now,
most insulation is going to be synthetic for just that reason.
