Yes, it would.
(We go to the river's edge... or (*more frequently*  :)  to the store, (to 
buy builder's sand or play sand).  (I have spent many, many years making 
cuttings, as that is part of my profession, and)  One fellow, whom I have 
made many cuttings for, buys (used) sand from a sand-blasting company!  (It 
doesn't happen to be *my* personal preference, but it worked fine for 
thousands upon thousands of cuttings! ... I promise!   :)
