Judy,

Hyde Park is a wonderful area of Chicago (though one doesn't have to =
stray too far away for it to become very iffy, the only time I was ever =
mugged was about 5 blocks west of there). In college I had a good friend =
that lived there and it was always a high point to go visit her, hit = some
of the cafes for live music, and just generally soak up the = atmosphere.

I do very much like the way you celebrate the 4th, it is a great show of =
respect and patriotism.

Moi is also having a very American 4th. I am down at Daytona Beach for =
the Busch and Winston Cup (it will really suck when it is called the =
Nextel Cup next year, it has gotten to the point that it has been the =
Winston Cup so long that the Winston part has almost become = disassociated
with RJ Reynolds products). Plenty of good old American = car racing, beer,
food, fireworks, and stupendous fly-overs. And it is = very likely I will
cry while singing the National Anthem. I can no = longer sing it without
thinking about all the lives lost over 200+ years = either
defending/creating our country or being targeted as an emblem of = our
country.

Enjoy and have a safe 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July to all.

I will spend it at some friends where a bunch of us gather each 4th =
and
take turns reading the Gettysburg Address and Declaration of Indep. =
in
the front garden. In the past the readings have been followed by a
"typical" English breakfast; scones, strawberries and cream, tea, =
coffee
and champagne. (Well, I guess the coffee and champagne are not so
  typically English.)

This year, since the family is moving to the Univ. of Chicago area we
will celebrate in a fuller and longer fashion--a more American meal. =
I
  will miss the scones!

  Judy
