From: John Beckett "Geo." wrote in message news:: > Oh you understood what I was saying? That's because evolution has direction, > you recognize it why can't you admit it exists? By my value judgement, a human is a much more interesting and generally worthwhile organism than any bacteria. But I don't see any "direction". I suppose you could define "direction" as "evolving from less to more complex form". Yes, as time passes, more complex organisms arise. However, there is every reason to believe that if the dinosaurs had not been wiped out, then intelligence as we know it would not have evolved. I'm prepared to be less dogmatic about this speculation - it is POSSIBLE that intelligence may not have evolved because it really wouldn't do you much good in Dinosaur Park. Therefore, there is no inevitable direction towards intelligence. Also, if the Cuban Missile Crisis had led to a nuclear winter, all intelligent life forms may have died. So it is possible that intelligence could be too smart for its own good. Maybe in the long term, the bacteria really will have the last laugh.
