An XML nodelist could be thought of as a "superset" of the
current nodelist. It would be pretty easy to strip structure, extended
characters, extra flags and other "new stuff" from the XML
nodelist and output a vanilla St. Louis format nodelist, but when doing it
the other way around the result would lack all the "extended"
features that the new format otherwise could provide.
