  I don't know if this works for you aesthetically but Antec makes carrying
straps that are basically H-shaped heavy canvas with an extremely
comfortable cast rubber handle.  I haven't researched how many sizes are
available but aside from just purchasing one outright the design may
inspire you in a new direction if you decide it will be very difficult to
prevent ripping through the case walls.  These straps are essentially belts
like for pants in that they are adjustable somewhat in size and very
secure.  Some people I know have decided to leave them on permanently
rather than as needed and really they don't look too bad.  Depending on how
you gain access to your case this might be worthwhile at least to see an
example.
