The local police here used to do strip searching as a routine matter until
the stink became too much and they were forced to stop it. Pressure from
the public,
law suits and the courts put an end to it.

It is wise never to trust the police. They see themselves as fighting a
"war on crime" in which civil liberties can and should be
curtailed and collateral damage expected and acceptable.  They are in fact
a paramilitary force operating
in a civilian environment, always a dangerous thing. Abuse of their power is all
too frequent and represents an always present danger. Constant monitoring
and strict civilian control are a necessity.
