subject: Cloning with XXCopy

-> TW>If the goal is more capacity, and there is no space for another
drive but a
-> TW>single large drive will work, here is another option. This is only for
-> TW>Windows 9X, as the cloning process does not produce a bootable
disk in NT4,
-> TW>2000, or XP.

-> TW>1. Download and install the freeware program xxcopy
http://www.xxcopy.com/.
-> TW>2. Install the new drive as a slave (or cable select), partitioning and
-> TW>formatting as desired. This would have to be done with the case
open and the
-> TW>drive just attached to the cable and power. If you want
multiple partitions,
-> TW>obviously what will later become the "C" partition
will need to be large
-> TW>enough to hold the existing files on the master "C".
But assuming a single
-> TW>partition which will temporarily be assigned as "D",
the basic sequence is:
-> TW>3. Connect the new drive as D:
-> TW>4.  FDISK                         (initialize a partition)
-> TW>5. FORMAT D: (init volume for file access)
-> TW>6. XXCOPY C:\ D:\  /CLONE        (copy all the files)
-> TW>7. connect the new drive as C:
-> TW>8. FDISK (set active partition)

-> TW> Complete instructions are on their web site at

-> ----------------------------------

-> TW>http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy10.htm. Note that the clone
operation may need
-> TW>to be done 2-3 times before it completes.

-> -----------------------------
-> This caught my eye. How on earth can CLONE OPERATION not BE
-> COMPLETE with the first operation???? If it isn't, how on
-> earth will you ever know when it IS complete?

 Don't have any Idea. But apparently at least one person has sucessfully
"Cloned" a Hard Drive using XXCopy.
I have no interest myself having both Power Quests "Drive Image" and
Nortons "Ghost" at my disposal.
 As you mentioned in another post you can pick up either Nortons System
Works Pro(Which Includes Ghost) 2001 or 2002 very inexpensively.
