Because of the hardware limitations of some display adapters (which weren't
designed with multitasking and multiple screen sessions in mind), DOS
programs must not be run in the background in certain graphics modes (if they
were allowed to, they would either corrupt the foreground session, or become
confused as to the state of the display adapter and crash).
Irrespective of the state of DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION, OS/2 Warp will suspend
a VDM that has put the display into these graphics modes if it is switched to
the background.
WordPerfect for DOS has a WYSIWYG option that uses graphics mode instead of
text mode. Are you using that by any chance ?
