That part of GDB is a mess.  I tried to make it work for emx 0.9c;
however, I gave up.

There are two reasons for GDB not being able to read a register:

1. You're using a certain version of a Matrox PM driver

2. Interrupting GDB left ptrace() and DosDebug in an inconsistent
   state

Apparently, #2 applies to you.
