FR> Yeah, Thaw does a superb job, although the writing recently has
FR> weakened, about the time when the shows stopped being based on
FR> Dexter's novels and started being based on "characters created by Colin
FR> Dexter."
I missed the latest episode (apparently a new one) on PBS. We had people drop
in for a visit and I felt it would have been impolite to turn on the TV and
set the VCR to record the show with them sitting right there.
FR> I also like the characterizations of PD James Inspector Daiglaish (sp)
FR> and Christie's Miss Marpel. I would never watch those old Miss Marpel
FR> movies featuring M. Rutherford--at least I think that's who she was.
Yeah, Rutherford was in a few and I think Angela Lansbury ( of Murder, She
Wrote) starred in the original version of 'The Mirror Cracked'.
RW> with me, and my latest read 'The Man in the Queue' is also enjoyable.
FR> Either I've read that one or one with a similar title. Does it open
FR> with a man murdered while standing in a queue waiting to get a ticket?
Yes, that is the start of the novel.
P.D. James is coming to Calgary in Nov. to do a reading and book signing, I
hope I will be in town to see and hear her. Unfortunately I probably won't
know until a day or two before if I'll be in town; but I should just buy the
tickets and hope as these events almost always sellout. We went to see Carol
Shields last night. She read a bit from her latest novel (Larry's Party) and
answered questions. She was quite interesting and a good reader. I haven't
read her most celebrated work, 'The Stone Diaries' but I did read an earlier
novel 'Happenstance' several years ago. Shield's talked about how she always
has been a voyeur of other people and loves to listen in to other
conversations to get ideas for her work.
