Yes. It works quite well for most things. There was someone on the net asking 
how to do that just a week or so ago. I provided them the step-by-step 
instructions for doing so.
This case was different. Mitch wanted to do a table and save it as ASCII not
as a printer file. The problem is that you can't save a table as ASCII. If
he had indicated that he merely wanted to be able to print a table from
disk, I would have gone into loading the appropriate printer driver and
printing the file to disk.
His second attempt was to save the file as columns. Once again, ASCII doesn't
support columns.
It's easy to save something as a printer file. WP merely saves the file with
the appropriate printer control codes. As long as you are dealing only with
text (no font or attribute changes) without underscoring, italicizing, etc.,
it is possible to print to disk and have something not too bad. It won't
be all that good, but it'll be better than nothing.
The more complex the document, the less likely this will be to produce a 
satisfactory result. Unfortunately, the same would also be true of "save
as".
