A month or two back I could have bought a M$-free Dell 3GHz (free
upgrade from 2.8GHz) Xeon server for under $500 including free shipping.
I don't recall exactly, but I think that included 512MB of RAM (free
upgrade from 256MB).
That also didn't include a keyboard or mouse, which was good because (a)
they don't make keyboards with the F-keys in the right place any more
and (b) I prefer a trackball to a mouse.
The downside was that I would have had to get the 2nd CPU from them at
the same time, which wasn't such a good deal.
The price is higher today.
