1237a08d9490 tech Hello Wayne - --8<--cut WC> I very much appreciate information gleaned from both of you WC> and never saw your ongoing dispute as serious. Though WC> seriously there IS more money to be made in Windows if WC> you're an administrator because it has majority market WC> share and as it breaks a lot you've job security. At one time I would've thought a company would pay me if I could keep the equipment online 24/7 and never had to touch it. Now I see the error of my philosophy and realize the need to sabotage the companies aspirations in order to guarantee my own survival. Hurrah for Windows and all of it's flaws!!! Ever run across the BOFH files? WC> Also I hear a new worm took down 22,000 Windows servers WC> yesterday, more overtime for administrators installing the WC> patch they should have installed months ago ;-) Something being referred to as "go-slow" and denial of service and other things I usually don't care about, yes. WC> When I screwed up yesterday overwritting the DOS FAT my WC> three Linux partitions were unaffected. Everything is back WC> now except I need to snag the Multimail reader for Linux, WC> already got ATP. I'm really curious about this "overwriting the DOS FAT" thing. I don't want to embarass you but frankly I could use a good laugh right about now. ;-) WC> Have you heard of Abiword (word processor) and the Linux WC> (Dillo) browser? Yes, to both. Alan Zisman mentioned Abiword recently and said it was his preference but incompatible with his associates. Dillo I recall but no details. WC> Dillo's binary runs 200K and looking at screen shots from WC> the web page is *very* impressive. This is very much a WC> graphical browswer however I've no idea what it need by way WC> of support. Oh yeah only eats under 900K of RAM running! From what Steven D. is saying the size of the actual browser's binary is often the tip of an iceberg. Some small browser binaries require HUGE libaries of support files. :-\ CA>> In the foreseeable future we will all keep a Windows CA>> install handy for compatibility until such time as the CA>> majority of the installed base of users is using some CA>> other OS. At that time we will keep that OS 'handy'. WC> Wish I'd had a copy of my FAT for recovery yesterday. Still WC> only a few hours to restore most everything. You really must reveal more details about how this was done. WC> Lost some of my scantilly clad, nude, brunette JPG's WC> however :-( I visit the 'page3' girls when the need for a battery charge hits me. WC> Gotta drop that newsgroup too because there a lot of WC> _lolita_ crap being dropped in there At the age of 40 or so I went, for the last time, into nudey bar. You know how hard it gets to determine the age of young people once you get past a certain age? I couldn't convince myself that these 'ladies' were anything but children and I became embarassed to be there and left never to return. Friends have insisted that they probably _were_ underage in that particular establishment but I won't go anymore, it was too uncomfortable for me. WC> as well as some very determined spammers with an AI program WC> generating random text messages and spamming the newsgroup. My news-server won't even allow me to cross-post in more than 3 groups. If the servers were setup properly this couldn't happen. CA>> As long as we need a Windows install we will need DOS to CA>> maintain it. WC> And fortunately I'd backed that up to tape in November of WC> last year. Tape was necessary when there were no affordable alternatives. QIC tape is, however, not entirely dependable based on my experiences using it. CA>> I don't sell this stuff and really don't care what OS CA>> dominates the existing installed user base. I would've CA>> voted for OS9 myself but Microware got greedy after their CA>> license to Radio Shack ran out and upped the price to $700 CA>> US. From Radio Shack it was $99. Big jump. :-\ WC> I don't care what O.S. anyone runs either but it's looking WC> very much like Linux has snagged me, I like the power, I WC> like the price and I lile the powerful freeware apps and WC> Microsoft "Word" compatible word processors available! OS9 wasn't competing with any other OS and therefore could move in any direction the users wanted it to. Linux seems locked into a contest with Windows and by doing so is destined to become another 'Windows' if it hasn't already accomplished that feat in recent distributions. Knoppix claims to have 2000 files on the CD and I think 200 software applications? I seriously doubt I would ever _want_ 200 applications. Apparently everything on the CD is compressed?
