Hi Julian:
I developed noise on bootup here.
First I noticed the fan on the back of the case was slow in starting,
Replaced it and then noticed the CPU fan did the same so I replaced that too
Now they howl like a high wind, but things are cool
Just my experience here
My 3 drives
Drive 1 is about 14 months old
Drive 2 is about 3 years old
Drive 3 (SCSI) is 10 years old
Regards Al
