The Braves traded Terry May to the Pirates for saying:
TM> I did. By even bringing up his son in an attempt to excuse his actions,
TM> he's dirties the son's name by making him a part of this mess. The son
TM> should have never been mentioned, period. It was low class all the way.
I didn't see it that way. Alomar said that the guy had become bitter since
his son's death. He didn't use that as an excuse for his spitting, he was
stating why he thought Hirschbeck had done what he did. The most you can say
is that he showed bad judgement for broaching the subject and even worse
judgement to say it to the press. If anyone was low class, it was the press.
They should have recognized that this would have provoked a response and let
the story die but they went out of their way to get the reaction (Which, I
think, more than justifies why many sports leagues don't want the press
around the officials).
I personally think that Alomar got off lightly but I don't think that he had
malice in his heart when he made his comments.
