Hello All.
You might remember my promise to send in a message about what I think about
Yes _Close to the Edge_. Well, I was working on it when my computer crashed,
and it took me two weeks to get everything up and working. But now, I have
time to fulfill my promise: New Stuff !
1. Yes: _Close to the Edge_. First impression: nice cover. Second impression:
nice titles, playing length, ... Third impression: Well, it sounds ok, but
it's not really everything. It comes right after half of Pink Floyd, Jarre,
Alan Parsons Project and most Marillion I've heard so far, but before Deep
Purple, Rolling Stones, Metallica and Vangelis. After a second, a third, a
fourth listen, I started to like it more. Ranking remains as above, but Yes
is nearing on Jarre. Cool voice, Jon, but I still prefer Fish. Conclusion: a
nice album, and perhaps an invitation to explore more of the world of Yes.
2. Marillion: _Brave_. OK, it's NOT Fish, but it's still a nice album. I
bought it because I thought it was a Fish album (that's what misinformation
can do to you), so I was a bit disappointed hearing Steve Hogarth. But it's a
good album, and I think I am ready to look after some other non-Fish
Marillion (after completing their early albums).
3. Marillion: _Misplaced Childhood_. W E H A V E A W I N N E R.
(perhaps I already had mentioned that I had this album, well now I really
have it, legally ;-) This one goes right up in the charts, and comes next to
_Dark Side Of The Moon_ _Wish You Were Here_ and _Tales Of Mystery And
Imagination_. It's a crushing album, with only one disadvantage: the playing
length. I wish it were twice as long. This album has everything: great
lyrics, great music (dark and slow, dark and fast, bright and slow, bright
and fast), great voice, great cover, ...
Question: who the heck is Milo ?!?!?!?
4. Alan Parsons: _On Air_. It's a very nice album, not very Project-like but
very Alan-like. The sound quality is perfect, as usual. The Cd-Rom is nice,
too. Great concept, this trial and error. Storm Thorgersson should get a
prize for this cover art. And I think 'Apollo' is a fine example of the
spirit of the Project: instrumental, up-to-date (housey), vocals by John F.
Kennedy, and I think it is sort of a house remix of mammagamma. The guitar in
it really sounds like it. But, unfortunately, I can't consider this album as
a Prog rock album, not even Prog pop. But that's no reason to break it down!
I also got Vangelis, _Antarctica_ but that's not Progrock at all, so I will
stop here.
Met vriendelijke groeten,
Steven Van Impe
PS. I have a question, but it's waaaay off-topic, it's just something I'd
like to know: can you guys tell from my way of writing that I'm not English?
I try to write Brittish English, do you notice that?
