Further looking at the problem, I reread the readme for the java which
noted that I need to do this:

In the browser settings, open the helper application
settings and define a new type. Use the following
values to define the entry:

Description of type: Java Web Start
File Extension: jnl jnlp
MIME type: application/x-java-jnlp-file
Application to use: \jre\javaws\javaws.exe

Now I can see in my FF 1.5 - tools - options - downloads - view and edit
actions - the application for .jnl (but not .jnlp)  but when I go to FF
1.5.0.1 and try the same thing, there's no entry for .jnl or .jnlp and no
apparent way to add one - the help says that there are only entries for
the filetypes that HAVE been downloaded.

I put a dummy file xxx.jnl on my website and downloaded it.  It showed as
text.  After this, there was a .jnl entry in the helpers, but even setting
it to the right place for javaws.exe didn't solve the problem.  I'm also
not sure if these helper settings are in the MOZHOME/Firefox directory, in
which case they are shared between 1.5 and 1.5.0.1 or in the program
directory somewhere.

Any ideas?
