The rumors I heard is that the Pentium (and it's close relatives) will be the
last Intel processor to run the x86 instruction set 'natively'. Future
processors are supposed to have natively a more efficient instruction set and
the early models would use some software+hardware instruction translation.
I would not be surprised if Intel currently has problems making such hardware
out-perform high-end Pentiums with x86 instructions. That would be a
requirement for successfull marketing ....
