I rather imagine I'd go that way myself on a BBS if I had one. Seems I misinterpreted the original post. Actually I _have_ software for 2 different BBS setups but no current space for them. And the author hangs out in RJT> the LINUX echo, among other places. It is, I get regular update information from Sourceforge regarding his OLR. In fact I once mentioned to Mr. McBrine that I thought the default on MM should be to save uploaded messages instead of purging them and the next release that change was implemented :-) There's a prompt screen on opening MM for both save messages and read bulletin and all too often I'd hit enter twice both opening MM and deleting unsent messages :-( I grew annoyed at having written extensive texts, inadvertantly deleted them before uploading only to find the cluster unrecoverable due to having been overwritten. Due to my slow progress on saving funds I'm thinking about swapping the A and C drive from this machine into the Pentium, slaving the large damaged drive, mapping out the bad sectors with Linux and going that way. Else I must wait until March to proceed. WC> Still haven't figured out what Verizon mail wants for WC> authentication in SMTP despite many attempts. I've made two fido inquiries so far, no joy. Need to inquire in the alt.os.slackware.linux newsgroup. WC> One I get past that I may very well move to Linux as my primary WC> O.S. RJT> The hardest part of that is picking the right config lines to support RJT> what hardware you have. I suspect I've got that right NOW. I just need to set the correct environment setting and place the configured file where it's looked for. I looked up the scan rates for this monitor and the old Sastoroids game version of "Asteroids" already recognizes and uses my video chip and driver rather than the default VGA. Exiting the game yields up that bit of information AAMOF I need to delete one copy of XF86Config I've saved in a second location. So far no clutter in Linux and all my alterations have .backup file copies. WC> Soon as X-Windows flies I'm nuking the old Slackware release and WC> upgrading to 8.1 RJT> I have an 8.1 cd here but haven't thought much about doing the upgrade RJT> just yet. I'm just snagging it off the net. There's a new "Victor" release linked to the Basic Linux site that occupies under 350 meg full install for a 486 with 16 meg RAM. A Canadian offers his particular "Victor" release shipped 15 dollars U.S. with manual. Seems a lot of people on the net are hacking minimal installs for both legacy and more modern hardware, most are free. Heck I only downloaded Basic Linux 1.7 2 months ago and now it's BL 1.8. WC> Read my old Slackware book and found it WC> wanting in many areas but one place it excells and that's the WC> explaination of the VI editor which though less comprehensive gets WC> me going again far quicker than the book I have on that editor. RJT> I'm *real* lazy about editors, am awfully familiar with good old RJT> WordStar, Qedit, and similar stuff, and under linux tend to use the RJT> one that mc gives you. I've been a bit lazy in that priority too and so am currently using three editors on two Linux releases, four if you include VIM which I'm not yet up to speed on. RJT> Maybe one of these days I'll have a go at RJT> learning one or more of the other ones that are on there. I keep hearing you NEED to know VIM or VI, all but one extranious command the same, in a rescue situation as that may be the only editor available on rescue disks. Fortunately I've retained the ramdrive Basic Linux so I can muck about with the hard drive version in hda2 or my old release of Slackware in hda4. I really, short of a total disk failure, don't see three partitions corrupting or failing at the same time. Come to think of it I _should_ make another backup of my current MBR with FIPS as it's been rather radically modified. My current backup reflects only a single large DOS partition while in reality it's now 1/2 DOS with the other half divided up between 2 Linux native and 1 Linux swap. --- MultiMail/PBellDOS v0.42* Origin: FidoTel & QWK on the Web! www.fidotel.com (1:275/311) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 275/311 10/345 379/1 633/267 |
