I have a Courier so I can't help you specifically.
Mine has a dipswitch to set whether the +-+-+ sequence makes the modem
drop carrier OR stay online and enter command mode which let's users get
stats on connection and performance.
If your modem does not have a switch or register to control this, try
setting S2 to 0 or something else like 127 (so you can still use it) and
("I think") you need to set S12=0.
