| subject: | Re: Tour de France - Landis tests positive? |
From: "John Beamish" Go back the Seoul Olympics. Ben Johnson set a new world record for the 100m and then tested positive for the steroid stanozolol. As many subsequent events have demonstrated, he wasn't the only person who was chemically enhanced back then ... he just happened to be the one who was caught. (There's a long, somewhat obvious backstory there but it isn't important.) Anyway, great weeping and gnashing of teeth here in Canada and the Dubin Commission was set up to investigate drugs in sports. Lots of interesting (somewhat predictable but interesting nonetheless) testimony. The best quote came from Dr. Jamie Astaphan (Johnson's doctor). There had been lots of testimony showing that illegal drugs were widely used and I don't recall whether Astaphan's comments were actual testimony at the hearings or something he said it afterwards, but it summed everything up perfectly: "The playing field was always level. It just wasn't at the level you thought it was." On Thu, 27 Jul 2006 12:16:09 -0400, Rich Gauszka wrote: > Unfortunately Landis tested positive for the most remarkable 17th stage > of > the race.
