WHEW!
I was scared to death of this series, because of the Dodgers pitching staff
(and the Braves' offense doesn't exactly remind anyone of the Mariners). But
after going up 2-0 and heading back to Atlanta, I'm breathing a lot easier.
It's not over yet, but it sure looks good.
Smoltz and Maddux both did their jobs. Both have been better, but they were
plenty good enough against a weak, slumping Dodgers offense. And it's a good
thing they did do their jobs, because Dodgers pitching has also lived up to
expectations.
Cox really took a big chance, taking Maddux out after 7 innings and only 72
pitches, with Maddux on a roll. Thankfully, McMichael made the move look
good (or at least not bad). In fact, McMichael looked so good, I hated to
see the occasionally erratic Wohlers come out for the 9th. But it all worked
out in the end.
Great series so far, not just because the Braves are up 2-0. I'll take a
good ole fashion pitching duel any day over a slugfest, especially since
slugfests are so much more common.
