I always thought the reason/purpose/effect of the 7 to 1 anchor rode was
both of the above:
1. Changes angle anchor is being pulled in
(especially good for the Danforth style anchor)
2. The weight of the rope, in addition to being a
shock absorber, actually functions as an anchor itself, with only strong
waves, winds actually tranfering force all the way down to the anchor.
