I used to play funny little games with myself about how I was really,
truly going to leave a couple fingers' worth of gin or whatever in
the day's bottle "so there'll be some for tomorrow." Sometimes I even
went to bed ( = passed out) thinking I had done so. Didn't
matter--somehow it was never there the next day, and I could always
think of a reason ( = fable) why special circumstances made that
necessary. I sure had a hell of a lot of special circumstances in those
days.
