I use DAT for audio lots,and one problem it does have is that even Pro
gear tape handleing is not that robust,and consumer quality DAT is a
joke as far as reliability is concerned for audio.
The Techs I've asked about this tell me its something to do with the
physical size of the mechanism..apparently if the standard had been
set about 100% larger they would have obtained VCR reliability at
a reasonable price but because its so small its expensive to make and
fragile.
CD-R is dead,and DAT is dying and I need something better right now :-)
