beliefs, principles, etc, that one does not actually possess.

I figure a person who becomes addicted to a pain medication that they
started taking because of a medical problem that causes lots of on-going
pain did not set out to have fun with drugs. I think you just want to think
the worst of his motives and real beliefs because you find things he says
politically offensive and you do not like the influence he has on others.
