In a message dated 02-27-97, Murray Lesser said to David Noon about
Object-oriented Cobol
Hi Murray,
ML>_IBM_Systems_Journal_. Ms Flint points out that "Visual Age for COBOL
ML>for OS/2" is one of "the new object-oriented COBOL
compilers from IBM."
Alas, I no longer receive IBM Systems Journal. I think I will ring IBM UK
and see if I can receive it here.
ML> She deals with three types of "wrappers" to marry the
two completely
ML>different approaches to problem solution. Which one to use depends on
ML>which type of program ("legacy" or
"object-oriented") is using the
ML>facilities of the other.
I'm not sure what problems these address. From what little I've seen of OO
COBOL it is largely incompatible with legacy COBOL.
ML> Not that I know too much about it, but it seems to me that the
ML>problems she discusses will require equivalent solutions when Santa
ML>Teresa delivers the new object-oriented PL/I compilers, said to become
ML>available "real soon now."
I have a copy here. The beta is embedded in the GA of V1R2 Professional.
The OO add-ons are rather C++ looking and a little inadequate. E.g., there
is still no facility for overloading or overriding operators, so expressions
containing class instance variables are a crap-shoot. I'll write more about
this when I've had more of a play around.
Regards
Dave
