Warrant Officer Irving Newton is ordered from the weather office at
Ft. Worth to Gen. Ramey's office. Newton, in front of a small number of
reporters & officers, identifies the wreckage on the floor as a weather
balloon. ( Marcel is present, but not allowed to speak.). Newton is
photographed & sent back to his regular duties. ( Randle & Schmitt,

6:17 PM. The FBI sends a teletype message to Director Hoover, telling
him a balloon is responsible for the reports.

7:30 PM. The AP breaks into its last message with a bulletein telling
the world that the Roswell flying disc is nothing more than a balloon.

Gen. Ramey announces to the world that the officers at Roswell have
been fooled by a weather balloon. The general also appears on Ft
worth-Dallas radio station WBAP. ( Ibid.)

An unscheduled flight arrives at Roswell from Bolling Field (
Washington, DC.). Lewis Rickett meets it and gives the crew a sealed
box with samples of the wreckage in it. Rickett must get a signature
before he can surrender the package. ( Ibid.)

Morning Newspapers inform the world of the identification of the
Roswell object as a weather balloon.

Clean-up at the various sites resumes at sunrise. The military is
trying to get everything picked up before more civilians stumble onto
the field. ( Ibid, p. 169.)

8:00 AM Members of the First Air Transport Unit begin loading crates
into C-54s. They load 3 or 4 aircraft with an intermediate destination
of Kirtland. From there, some are taken to Los Alamos. Armed guards are
present at the aircraft loading. ( Ibid.)

Jud Roberts & Walt Whitmore, Sr. attempt to drive out to the debris
field but run into the cordon & are turned back. ( Ibid.)
