No, it's not beside the point.  Riling is one thing, but he considered drug
abusers morally
inferior and that they should be jailed.  If I said adultry was wrong and
that adulterers
should be stoned, but practiced adultry myself, I'm a hypocrite.

Assuming you're right, then he should have stated things differently.  How
about, "beware
the painkillers are highly addictive and watch yourself," or words to
that effect.  Rather
than you're the scum of the earth for abusing drugs and should be jailed.

From what the news reports say, yes, he bought them illegally--supposedly from his
housekeeper/maid and to the tune of thousands of pills.
