Potomac R. and Rock Creek; 38ø54'N 77ø03'W. Built on what was originally
low, swampy land and so named because of the haze from industries along the
Potomac. George Washington Univ., the Kennedy Center, and the Watergate
Bldg. are located here, as well as office bldgs. for the U.S. Dept. of
State, the Dept. of the Interior, and the Federal Reserve. The source of
State Dept. policy-making is often referred to as "Foggy Bottom."
