subject: Refilling Laser Toner

Hi, Jay. Thanks for responding - -

JE> Have you ever compared the price of razor blades for your
JE> injector razor to the original price of the razor?

Hee. I don't recall even _seeing_ a Shick Injector type razor in the
past 30 years or so. But I know what you're saying, and that is why I
haven't bought any replacement blades for that "free" Shick Track 3
or some such name razor which came here in the mail a couple months ago.
It gave good shaves for awhile, but blades are now dull, and I'm not
going to pay those prices for more blades.

JH>Viola - it workedlike a charm. Prints like a new one now. With the
JH>shipping and all, cost less than $15. I like it.

JE> Good move, for a while, till the cleaner bar needs
 JE> replacing. Then what?

Grinning and ducking that thrown bucket of cold water, I'll first say
that my toner refill is still working well for me, so I propose to
emulate Teddy K. and cross that bridge when I get to it.

On my HP LJ4L AFAICT the toner, drum and associated cleaner bar(s), as
well as the waste toner bin, corona wire and etc. are all internal to
the cartridge, and not replaceable or cleanable short of a cartridge
disassembly and "remanufacture" job. I knew I was taking a bit of a
gamble with just buying the toner refill kit, but I needed a quick fix,
and didn't want to wait for Ebay auctions to close. I took the seller's
"buy-it-now" option, and received the kit a few days later. I don't
print all that much, and even if I only get a couple months of service
out of this refill, I'll consider it worthwile, if for nothing more than
the learning experience.

Where I volunteer, we get quite a few donations of both laser and inkjet
printers. Often, those get given up on (probably too soon), because
they are reluctant to buy new drums, toner cartridges, ink cartridges,
and etc. for donated freebies. For them, it makes no sense to go to
Office Depot and pay $56 for a remanufactured or clone toner cartridge
when they assign a value of more like $25 to a small working laser
printer. That's what I paid them for my LJ4L, and for that same price
they sold one to good old Ray Edester. My 'cheap fix' experiences with
experiments like this one, and my recent salvaging of that dried-out HP
inkjet cartridge may end up helping this non-profit organization to keep
some of this equipment in service for awhile more.
