EM_SETINSERTMODE message.  :-)

You can do this whenever that field gets the WM_FOCUSCHANGE message telling
it that it is gaining the focus, or perhaps just at the beginning.

There is another interpretation here - if you want the field to be
"selected" by "default," have you considered getting
the WM_FOCUSCHANGE message, and then using EM_SETSEL to "select"
the entire field?
