In the "Rumpole of the Bailey" series of stories, one of Rumpole's old chestnuts is a judge who asked a prisoner if he had anything to say before sentence of death was pronounced upon him. The prisoner muttered, "Bugger all." The judge asked the clerk, "Did the prisoner say something?" The clerk replied, "He said, 'Bugger all,' my lord." "That's funny," mused the judge. "I thought I heard him *say* something." I've tried to translate that into American English, but we don't have a phrase that carries such a double connotation. -- Steve http://www.qmss.com/~sewing --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
