this is an old and honorable method of balloting........  I use it 
monthly in the Masonic Lodge.  A very strong admonission is that you 
never discuss the reality of which way you actually cast the ballot.  
It is typically used only for canadicey of members and not used for 
votes of paying bills or other items.  It has worked for hundreds of 
years.  
In an election of a slate of officers, a written ballot with 
tellers counting is an acceptable method.  It takes time, but 
maintains the privacey of your decission.  Yes the tellers know an 
individual's ballot if they recognize the writing, but if they are of 
good charecter, this should not matter.
