A poor farmer at that. Where Sauer gets the idea that Robert Byrd's father
was in politics is a mystery. Byrd was born Cornelius Calvin Sales Jr. and
at the age of 1, after his mother died was adopted by his uncle Titus Byrd
and named Robert Carlyle Byrd. He grew up in coal mining country.
