Hi Jim!
JD> Glad you got to Alaska. How about telling us of your trip?
Hmmm, offtopic, but if Elvis permits? Elvis? Eeeeelvis!
JD> crash at Nome and the airport information page shows aviation fuel is
JD> $3.00/gallon.
Wow, how do you run a privately owned gas sucking radial there?????
Gas is in excess of $2/gal in Yukon ($3.50/gal over here).
JD> Anything interesting at Elmendorf?
What do you think? Didn't get in :-). Talked to the guy in the
visitor center at the gate and received the permission to turn
_behind_ the gate, that's all.
Saw some C-130 taking off and landing from the distance.
JD> I seen many of your countrymen visiting Denali National Park
Now getting offtopic, beg Elvis' pardon.
Nice view - Mt McKinley. Well, I was surprised how many Germans were
visiting Alaska, a lot of crazy anglers among them (can you imagine
what they wanted to move back home?). Never saw such a mass of people
at an RV rental station - nowhere in the US/Canada/Australia/Africa/NZ!
Perhaps there is the image of Alaska as the last frontier (says the
license plate :-)) that draws the attention of all the people.
You even find German translations throughout Anchorage International
Airport - NEVER saw that in any other part of the US.
I visited Alaska because it's one of the last places on earth where
you can rent a motorhome and where I haven't been before :-)
But I didn't regret (despite prices were quite high compared to
the rest of the US)! Wonderful landscape, had a lot of luck with the
weather, new RV, many (retreating) glaciers (tried to walk on
one - impossible), saw a lot of animals (bears, moose, beavers, deers,
porcupines, eagles, caribous, marmots and artic squirrels, salmons,
black flies, No-see-'ems...) and even more hunters :-( and fishermen
as well as a sulfur truck that accidentally spilled part of its load
into a river (turned over).
Flipped in the cruise control and drove the route Anchorage, Denali,
Fairbanks, North Pole (sic), Tok, Dawson, Mayo, Whitehorse, Skagway,
Haines (ferry), Valdez, Seward, Homer, Anchorage at a top speed
of 45 mph and often less (things that suck? Slow motorhomes :-)))).
Even made two boat tours ($$$) to Columbia glacier and Kenai Fjords,
saw whales, sea lions, otters and a calving glacier, fantastic!
And enjoyed an extraordinary gorgeous Indian Summer.
JD> and one had a surplus German Army communications truck converted to
JD> living quarters. Looked perfect for the job.
Bah, drove the Nabesna road with an ordinary 25ft up to the end
(the Ranger convinced me NOT to enter McCarthy road), went across
Hatcher Pass, did part of the Dalton hwy, drove Taylor and Top of
the World hwys and have been up to the sign post on the Silver trail
at Keno City!
Also took an 27ft up on Pikes Peak a couple of years ago, close to
your front door :-), still possess the Summit Access Pass.
I have more hairraising stories about Pinnacle Hwy, SD, and
Africa by RV :-)
