subject: What is DirectToSOM C++ ?

Replying to a message of Jonathan de Boyne Pollard to All:

 JdBP>                           What is DirectToSOM C++ ?

Please note that DTS was dropped from the SOM 3.0 release - while the beta
did support DTS, the release does not (most of the features of the beta
were dropped in the release, including the collection classes, the
lifecycle, event and persistency service).

JdBP> DirectToSOM is the logical next step to take with SOM.

But a big step away from Corba. There is Corba 2.0, which defines a real
Corba to C++ mapping. Corba comes a lot closer to the language principles
of C++ wrt. memory management of strings and sequences, naming and
exception handling.

I was startled because I used DTS myself, but perhaps IBM dropped the
current DTS now, to be able to switch to Corba 2.0 later, without beeing
hindered by DTS compatibility.

JdBP> For a C++ programmer, DirectToSOM C++ is the easiest way to use
JdBP> SOM, because there is very little new to learn. You just write
JdBP> C++ code as you always have done.

Except that the current IBM compiler's IDL emitter produces wrong data
types for some parameters. So I was forced to use the IDL-to-DTS mapping
instead.

JdBP> SOM comes with several such class libraries (or "frameworks")
JdBP> already. The Persistence, Replication, and Distribution
JdBP> frameworks are little more than libraries of SOM classes,

These frameworks are no longer continued. SOM 3.0 dropped them in favor for
the Corba Object Services, partially included.

Bye, Andreas!
