The "shock absorber" theory seems correct, and is easy to 
demonstrate:  Fasten a fair length of chain to a post (the 
anchor).  Bring it sort of taunt, at an angle simulating the 
angle from the bow with simulated scope.  Pull on the chain.  
It takes more than the initial pull to provide full pull 
to the post.  Note, however, it doesn't do much without the 
scope.  Doing the same thing with a simulated 1:1 scope 
provides nearly simultaneous reaction and reaction.
