==> A hush fell over the room when Brandy Harris said to Harriet Levy <==
HL> intervene. AA is, from the very start, a bridge back to LIFE...not a
HL> bridge back to AA. It's about learning to live *free* from active
HL> alcoholism [read addiction], NOT about finding new addictions to take
HL> the place of drugs and alcohol.
BH> Harriet, Thank you for that thought!! I was having a hard time with
BH> the fact that I have to miss a meeting or two to take care of other
BH> things. Guess I need to remember that LIFE goes on with AA, not just
BH> that AA goes on!!
Two really important things come to mind:
First that the newer one is, the more meetings it's suggested that
one make. 90/90 is important. Mostly because, for me, it ingrained
the habit of going to meetings. It also got me "known" in the meetings
I was going to. That has been a vital aspect to my recovery. Many
times I stayed sober (when I otherwise might not have) because I (a)
knew where to go; and (b) because there were people who I didn't want
to have to say "I have one day back" too. Yes, it's possible to stay
sober on a resentment .
For the same reasons I stress "regular" meeting attendance. The same
meetings week after week.
It got to a point, for me, after a while, that I has my regular meetings
and regular meeting nights. I planned social activities for before or
after those meetings, or on my one or two "nights off" during the week.
Yes, after 6+ years, I still arrange my schedule around my regular meetings.
It's gotten to a point where I enjoy them. I look forward to them.
they anchor my week.
But enjoy life. It's what it's here for ;-)
